Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
