Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
