Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing such medications must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something flipping and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
